‘Flora of Formosa’ is the result of four years of research and collaboration between artist YANG Chung-Ming and the Taiwan Forestry Research Institute under the Ministry of Agriculture. SHYU Jiann-Gwo Ph.D. was the key catalyst for this project and an indispensable soul on this journey that brings art and science together.
Dr. SHYU specializes in the conservation and restoration of paper-based cultural relics, the science of handmade paper, and traditional mounting of calligraphy and paintings. Alongside his roles as a civil servant and scientist, his deep artistic sensibility and vision enabled him to pioneer collaborations and exhibitions using the Institute’s resources and spaces.
Art and science may seem like unrelated fields at first glance, but the meeting of two romantic, curious, and investigative minds created a profoundly moving symphony. What is the process of collaboration between an artist and a scientist? Is it an instant rapport or a path of negotiation and compromise? What insights did the artist gain from science? And what inspiration did the scientist take from art?
Invited as the first scientist in the Gallery de sol lecture series, Dr. SHYU will reveal the mysteries of the Forestry Research Institute—how scientists’ research capacity is applied and influences our lives. As an artist who explored the Institute for four years, YANG Chung-Ming will also share the treasures of the Institute that kept him captivated.
