Can every sudden flash of inspiration in an artist’s creative process qualify as a pivotal moment in art history?
The emergence and occurrence of significant people, events, and things shape the evolution of history. Beyond changes in the social environment and the discovery of new materials and techniques, the achievements of individual artists and historians’ observations and syntheses of overarching artistic trends often become decisive factors affecting the development of art history.
This year Gallery de sol proposes the concept of “print-based art,” linking it to the Western term Fine Art Print (used to distinguish commercial prints from artists’ original works). We aim to offer a more inclusive understanding of media and creative space, encouraging more artists to forge important milestones in the history of print-based creation.
Taking this opportunity to present a new perspective to the Chinese-speaking world, we invited Professor HSIEH Chia-Chuan—whose long-term focus on the history of European printmaking brings deep insight—to engage in a rare dialogue with Taiwanese print-based artist YANG Chung-Ming. From the two distinct viewpoints of an art historian and an artist, we will explore how “pivotal moments” in the history of printmaking are defined and interpreted; what changes and impacts print-based creative art may bring within the contemporary art context; how art historians view and analyze artists’ bold transformations and valuable discoveries; and how artists digest and respond to the frameworks, writings, and critiques constructed by art historians.
The firsthand historical perspectives shared by the historian and the artist will offer viewers a deeper experience beyond personal understanding and feeling.
