Printmaking in the mid-twentieth century, through the talent and dedicated research of many artists, presented radically different expressions in both technique and subject matter, giving rise to numerous timeless masterpieces.

Gallery de sol will host a lecture on the afternoon of August 20, featuring Dr. LIU Pi-Hsu (Art Studies), who will guide attendees through the contexts of Christianity and Western art history, using rare complete sets of original prints to explore the color and line of Marc Chagall and Salvador Dalí, and to experience the primal blessings arising from religion and art.

On display are Salvador Dalí’s original etchings on Japanese paper created in 1971, the complete suite of twelve prints titled Song of Songs of King Solomon, presenting his interpretation of the Song of Solomon — a love poem of King Solomon that is also regarded as a religious classic; as well as Marc Chagall’s original glass mosaic series, the important Jewish commemorative work Vitraux pour Jerusalem (Jerusalem Windows).

In Dr. LIU Pi-Hsu’s view, these two complete suites are late works by major Surrealist masters. While they retain elements of Surrealist imagination, they have shed the exaggerated avant-garde rebellion, revealing a posture of returning to simplicity, integrating themselves into the original purity of faith and returning to the innocent roots of creative expression.

The Book of Genesis in the Old Testament reveals that God created the heavens and the earth, endowing life and order. Through His spirit He sheltered the earth and cared for all creation, bringing light and hope to a chaotic and dark world — the Creator’s first blessing. Humanity receives the Creator’s blessing and is fruitful and multiplies, stemming from that original blessing. His people sing praises to God’s lovingkindness, and all hymns of thanksgiving are the wise offering of the first blessing to future generations.

We sincerely invite you to visit Gallery de sol on Saturday afternoon to view the exhibition and step with us into the enthralling world of complete print suites that have captivated countless collectors. Explore the stories behind these prints!
