Talk Overview

Gallery de sol’s annual solo exhibition of Taiwanese artist Idas Losin, “Where There Is an Island, There Is Me,” opens an academic inquiry into contemporary Austronesian culture. On Saturday, January 23 (2:30–4:30 PM), we will hold a special event, “Gallery de sol lecture — An In-Depth Island Reading with Annual Artist Idas Losin.” We have invited Ren-Yi Liao, Director of the Graduate Institute of Museum Studies at Taipei National University of the Arts, to present “Island Hopping and Identity” and share his long-term observations of Idas’s work. The artist Idas Losin will also be present to revisit her adventures across the islands of the South Pacific, discuss her artistic search for indigenous roots, and reveal the often-hidden minority cultures within modern cities, together contemplating the evolving landscape of contemporary indigenous art.

Professor Ren-Yi Liao — Talk Abstract: Island Hopping and Identity: The Cultural Vicissitudes in the Paintings of Idas Losin
Idas Losin was born to a father of the Atayal people and a mother of the Truku people and lives in Wulai. Her life traverses the mountains and seas of Wulai and eastern Taiwan, while her creative journey extends across the Pacific islands inhabited by Austronesian-language peoples. Although she graduated from Fuxing Commercial & Technical High School of Arts and the Department of Fine Arts at Taipei National University of the Arts, and is versed in oil and acrylic painting influenced by modern painting, embedded in her blood is the cosmology and life view of the Austronesian peoples. Especially through a trajectory from Taiwanese indigenous communities toward the seas and islands of the Austronesian world, she cultivates a broad perspective of identity. Her artwork records her own process of identity formation and responds to the contemporary vicissitudes of Austronesian peoples, moving viewers and even bringing them to tears. (Ren-Yi Liao)
