Between the Trails to the Oriental Dream: Zao Wou-Ki and Yang Chung-Ming Dual Exhibition
This is an era illuminated by neon lights, dazzling and captivating. The cacophony of anime, the internet, and fashion trends is so intense that it can be blinding. In this landscape of light and sound, hearts drift, floating and sinking. Perhaps it is time to look down at the gray, dusty, yet fertile land beneath our feet, to uncover the layers of culture that have accumulated over time. This land is ancient but not distant; it is a homeland we can always find our way back to. Only by extending our roots deeply into this nourishing soil can we rise and soar into the blue sky above.
Zao Wou-Ki spent his life far from his homeland, residing in Europe, nevertheless his heart remained rooted in the Chinese culture that nurtured him. This deep connection allowed him to create a unique form of modern abstraction, drawing from the traditions of Eastern painting and calligraphy.
Yang Chung-Ming, a printmaker cultivated by Taiwan, encountered ancient books in the collection rooms of the National Palace Museum, some of which were over three hundred years old. This experience led him to explore the tradition of Eastern printmaking, inspiring him to create fine art prints belonging to Taiwan, that invite viewers to step into them.
At this pivotal moment when the world is emerging from the pandemic, Gallery de sol aspires to guide viewers back to our origins. Through the profound and warm embrace of our culture, we hope to find the strength to continue moving forward.
