Chika Kato
The concept of “儚い” (hakanai) inherent in Chika Kato’s artwork represents the ephemeral, fragile, and transient nature. Using the medium of glass, which is both hard and fragile, she portrays the phenomena that will ultimately vanish, extracting the beauty that resides in our memories. Through her creations, we can witness transparent ice columns, pure white snowflakes, flowing water, and drifting leaves. Each piece reflects the poignant sentiment of the Japanese culture, acknowledging the temporary existence and irreversible disappearance, while offering the interpretation and annotation of “物哀” from a young generation of artists.
Life and material possessions are finite, however the passage of time inevitably leads everything towards disappearance. Kato carries the transformations of life through the medium of glass, preserving fading memories. The emotions arising from the irreversible vanishing of material and time enable us to revisit and experience those delicate and beautiful moments, allowing us to sense the uniqueness and preciousness of every instant in life.
