Summer International Print Project 2020: Joan Miro

Every summer’s international print celebration! Gallery de sol, driven by its passion for printmaking, holds an annual International Print Exhibition showcasing masterpieces by masters from around the world.

Entering its second year, 2020 centers on the “L’Enfance d’Ubu” series created by Spanish master Joan Miró in 1975. Ubu Roi is an absurdist and surrealist play by Alfred Jarry, first staged in Paris in 1896. This subject was one Miró greatly favored; by depicting the story of the absurd and brutal monarch Ubu, Miró also satirized Spain’s political situation. From the Barcelona Series in the 1940s, to 1966’s King Ubu, the 1971 follow-up Ubu aux Baleares, and finally the L’Enfance d’Ubu, this theme recurs throughout his career. The L’Enfance d’Ubu series was produced when Miró was 82, demonstrating his enduring creative vigor and revealing the most mature expression of childlike playfulness. Several works from the series will be exhibited — a rare and delightful collection, the cutest surprise of this summer!

This L’Enfance d’Ubu series on display consists of lithographs Miró created at the age of 82; their charming, childlike strokes and rich, vibrant colors demonstrate Miró’s mature exploration of a return to artistic innocence in later life.
Since the outbreak of Covid-19 in January, Gallery de sol has continued to present outstanding exhibitions. In March, the “Childlike Hearts Against the Pandemic” exhibition, undeterred by difficult circumstances, used endearing and heartwarming works to support those worried by the pandemic through the power of art. The Miró exhibition launched in June brings rare masterpieces full of vitality and hope to uplift the spirit. Gallery director Ya-Ching Chang believes art’s power is especially important in people’s hardest moments. Carefully curated, the gallery presents major works by the world-renowned master Miró, allowing art lovers to enjoy world-class works without leaving the country and to receive the utmost visual and spiritual pleasure. Director Chang holds professional training in art history research and international-level curatorial experience, and also provides art collection consulting services, enriching Gallery de Sol with deeper and more innovative artistic practice.

While visiting the Miró exhibition at Gallery de sol, visitors can also discover a range of premier art lifestyle offerings at The Arcade.
