Katsunori Hamanishi

Katsunori Hamanishi (1949– )

Katsunori Hamanishi further integrated the mezzotint technique with contemporary design, creating works of bold style that combine abstract elements and geometric forms with striking visual impact. He skillfully employed the delicate gradations inherent in mezzotint to heighten the contrasts of light and shadow, endowing his works with both a modern and futuristic sensibility.

In Hamanishi’s practice, mezzotint is no longer confined to depicting representational objects, but is transformed into a tool for exploring abstraction and formal aesthetics. He is adept at constructing a rigorous and avant-garde visual language by repeating single motifs, interweaving lines, and orchestrating light and shadow across his compositions.

These works emphasize a sense of order within their geometric structures while also creating profound spatial depth. His art has been collected by major international institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, affirming his significant status and influence in the field of contemporary printmaking.
