This exhibition, “Printing out The Inner Spirit of Her,” will hold guided tour sessions led by Dr. Ya-Ching Chang (Sunny), Director of Gallery de sol. Drawing on her expertise in art history and the curatorial themes of the show, Dr. Chang will respond to the works on display. All three sessions in April and May are free to join. We look forward to sharing the remarkable works and creative cores of these women artists with a broader audience.

Exhibition Introduction

Since the mid-20th century, women’s art has been rediscovered, reexamined, and rethought. In an era of increasing gender equality, the visible balance of men and women in contemporary art seems to have moved away from being the central discourse. However, even as gender categories blur, differences between men and women—beyond physiological distinctions—still exist in ways that are difficult to define yet undeniably real.

Not a rebellion against authority nor simply opposing men, many women artists begin from the essence of being “human.” Using their innate sensibilities, they excavate inner worlds that are fantastical, shadowed, warm, and sometimes mad, later manifesting these states in delicate and beautiful external forms.

2023 marked an important moment of new beginnings for the world; “new” signifies creation and a different way of seeing. For its inaugural exhibition this year, Gallery de sol presents “Printing out The Inner Spirit of Her,” bringing together outstanding women artists from around the globe to offer a fresh breeze at this starting point. Featured artists include Mexican magical realist Leonora Carrington; American Abstract Expressionist Joan Mitchell; Louise Bourgeois, famed for her monumental spider sculptures; the highly spiritual Japanese artists Yayoi Kusama and Chiharu Shiota; and Valerie Hammond, who explores the relationship between material and immaterial.
