Printing out The Inner Spirit of Her: Leonora Carrington, Joan Mitchell, Louise Bourgeois, Yayoi Kusama, Chiharu Shiota, Valerie Hammond Group Exhibition
Since the mid-20th century, female art has been reconsidered, brought to light, and reflected upon again. Against the backdrop of gradually increasing gender equality, the prominence of male and female artists in contemporary art seems to have shifted away from the central discourse. Nevertheless, in an age where the gender framework is gradually blurring, the differences between men and women, apart from physiological variances, indeed persist with an indefinable yet undeniably existing essence.
It’s not about rebellion against authority, nor about standing in opposition to masculinity. Many female artists, starting from the essence of being “human,” leverage their inherent emotional advantages to delve into the fantastical, the obscure, the warm, and even the eccentric aspects of the inner world, which are then manifested in delicate and beautiful external forms.
The year 2023 marked a pivotal moment of fresh beginnings for this world, where “new” signifies creation and represents viewing the world from a different perspective. The inaugural exhibition at Gallery de sol this year, titled “Printing out The Inner Spirit of Her,” will showcase splendid works from many outstanding female artists worldwide, aiming to usher in a slightly different breeze at this starting point.
This includes Leonora Carrington from Mexico, known for her magical realism style; Joan Mitchell, a figure in American abstract expressionism; Louise Bourgeois, renowned for her giant spider sculptures; the highly spiritual creations of Japanese artists Yayoi Kusama and Chiharu Shiota; as well as Valerie Hammond, who explores the relationship between material and immaterial.
